Empowering women through athleticism, teamwork, competition, and volunteerism.
Flood Water Roller Derby was founded by the skaters for the skaters in June 2012. Flood Water is a body that owns, operates and governs itself according to its unchangeable Skater’s Bill of Rights. The Flood values athleticism, teamwork, accountability and generosity in its members.
Flood Water is primarily a female league, however all genders are welcome to our scrimmage events and fundraisers, and our normal league practices.

Roller derby is special to me because it gives me something to work towards. I am constantly inspired to be better. It’s shown me how to be a leader and use my voice. And best of all, it’s given me amazing teammates that I now consider family.

When I was a little girl one of my favorite things was to go to the roller rink with my friends and cousins. When I had kids of my own, I would teach them to skate by skating backwards myself and holding them up until their footing was better. I kept telling my husband I wanted to play roller derby, mentioning it for a few months. My husband finally told me “I’m tired of hearing about it. Do it or stop talking about it.” Next day I signed up for roller derby using a Groupon I found. Now, I skate for Flood Water. To be a part of this team meant more to me than I ever thought it could. It’s not just the sport, it’s the people. My people!!! Everyone is welcome and accepting. They help you grow as a skater and your confidence as a teammate. Derby Life is not just an expression, it’s a passion.

When I say roller derby saved my life, people tend to look at me a little crazy, but unless you’ve played, there is really no way to describe it. Derby found me at a super low point – watching strong, amazing, individuals, who were unabashedly themselves helped me find my voice and reminded me who I was and wanted to be. Plus, I get to share the track with people that I look up to and hit my friends.

Challenging myself, knowing awesome people, and hopefully contributing to this community in some way.

Roller derby is special to me because it makes me feel free, skating fast almost feels like flight, and the camaraderie of it all helps to remind you that there are always people who have your back!
Crash N’ Burner #48 – August 2023
I am a 48 year old gaming couch potato. Picking up a new sport is hard…. skating, stopping, blocking, strategy. It would be easy to get discouraged but each teammate is encouraging. They are so supportive and eager to help me progress. Their passion for derby is infectious. That’s what keeps me coming back. It’s exciting to work so hard because I can see myself learning new skills and showing progress.
Plus…. roller derby is a mosh pit on skates and that’s badass!

Roller derby is a strong community. Your team is your family. My team has helped support me through the toughest parts of my life, and I’ve supported my teammates whenever they needed it. But it’s not just your team. My dad is always amazed to see how opponents will hug and joke before the whistle blows, and then immediately start throwing each other on the floor, and then after the jam ends, we’re back to supporting each other. I have so much love for all the players in my community, we’re a pretty niche group, so we must be supportive.
Peach Jam #14 – August 2023
Roller Derby is the first sport I’ve ever been passionate about but it was the community that made me fall in love and want to keep coming back. I’d never met a more inclusive, encouraging, and welcoming group of people before in my life. FWRD is an amazing family.

Roller Derby is the coolest sport! I really enjoy the physical challenges it gives me. I feel a little more like myself when I play, and I can be as brash and coarse of a person as I want to be thanks to derby. I have also met the coolest people and have enjoyed making connections with these badass people. I’ve found a new home in roller derby.

Roller derby is special to me because I can transform my favorite hobby (roller skating) into something more meaningful! I come from a park skating background with barely any rules. I’m happy to join the Flood Water family, where all are welcome and encouraged to realize their true strength!

My cousin, FWRD alum, Endorphin Annie brought me to Flood 4 years ago, and I found a community and friends that I did not yet know I needed. Roller Derby has empowered me to become a stronger version of myself, to stand for what I believe in, and to keep trying, no matter what.

I turned 31 and thought to myself “I’m perpetually on the hunt for new ways to hurt myself,” and let me tell you, there’s nothing that screams ‘punk rock’ more than a 5’1″ goblin making their way through a mosh pit on quads.

Roller Derby has been something that I’ve admired from a distance since I was a teenager. I’ve never met a skater that wasn’t a total bad ass! Then one day I woke up and said “Why can’t you do that too?” and found FWRD who have been the most welcoming and supportive bunch of bad ass bitches!

Skating is the closest you can get to flying on the ground, as well as a great way to get out aggression in a safe place surrounded by women. The team is incredibly supportive and offers help whenever I need it and I’ve never left a practice feeling bad.
