When I say roller derby saved my life, people tend to look at me a little crazy, but unless you’ve played, there is really no way to describe it. Derby found me at a super low point – watching strong, amazing, individuals, who were unabashedly themselves helped me find my voice and reminded me who I was and wanted to be. Plus, I get to share the track with people that I look up to and hit my friends.

Roller derby is a strong community. Your team is your family. My team has helped support me through the toughest parts of my life, and I’ve supported my teammates whenever they needed it. But it’s not just your team. My dad is always amazed to see how opponents will hug and joke before the whistle blows, and then immediately start throwing each other on the floor, and then after the jam ends, we’re back to supporting each other. I have so much love for all the players in my community, we’re a pretty niche group, so we must be supportive.

Roller Derby gave meaning to my life when nothing else had. It gave priority to my health and fitness; it gave self care a purpose and a measurable goal; it gave me a community of support; an outlet for stress; a challenge to overcome; a continued struggle for excellence, and joy. Every day roller derby brings the joy of earning a better life for myself. Ask not what roller derby has done for me. Ask what I would not do for roller derby.

Roller Derby has been a way for me to fully express myself and combine a couple of my favorite things: skating and hitting people. It has also been a way for me to find my people and find my confidence. It grounds me and keeps me motivated to take care of myself to be the best skater and teammate I can be.

Derby is special because of the way people of different sizes, abilities and genders can all find their place. Both on and off the track, derby has helped me find my pack. Protect trans skaters!

Roller derby is special to me because I can transform my favorite hobby (roller skating) into something more meaningful! I come from a park skating background with barely any rules. I’m happy to join the Flood Water family, where all are welcome and encouraged to realize their true strength!

Playing Roller Derby is one of the best sports I could’ve joined. Games are fun, fast paced, and challenging. Quads are a pain at first but who could hate a sport where you can be a little shit and hit people, wear jammers down and whip your jammer through for points and at the end of a game have more friends then when you joined? Sounds like a good time to me, and it has been.

My cousin, FWRD alum, Endorphin Annie brought me to Flood 5 years ago, and I found a community and friends that I did not yet know I needed. Roller Derby has empowered me to become a stronger version of myself, to stand for what I believe in, and to keep trying, no matter what.

For me, roller derby is an outlet for my everyday stresses and my team is my family. In the years that I have been skating with Floodwater I have found more love, support and acceptance than I have ever known. Without my team there are a number of situations that I am not sure I could have gotten through alone. Roller Derby is my heart and my soul and I don’t know who I would be without it.

Roller derby is special to me because it makes me feel free, skating fast almost feels like flight, and the camaraderie of it all helps to remind you that there are always people who have your back!

I feel like I found a sense of community, one where I’m free to be myself but also feel included on a team of powerful and ambitious people :)

When I was a little girl one of my favorite things was to go to the roller rink with my friends and cousins. When I had kids of my own, I would teach them to skate by skating backwards myself and holding them up until their footing was better. I kept telling my husband I wanted to play roller derby, mentioning it for a few months. My husband finally told me “I’m tired of hearing about it. Do it or stop talking about it.” Next day I signed up for roller derby using a Groupon I found. Now, I skate for Flood Water. To be a part of this team meant more to me than I ever thought it could. It’s not just the sport, it’s the people. My people!!! Everyone is welcome and accepting. They help you grow as a skater and your confidence as a teammate. Derby Life is not just an expression, it’s a passion.

Roller derby has become a huge part of my life. The incredible sense of community and support within the sport is what makes it so special to me. Derby has helped me build confidence both on and off the track, and I love the challenge and energy that every practice brings. It’s an amazing workout, an empowering outlet, and a place where I’ve found lifelong friendships.

I love how the roller derby community welcomes you with open arms from day one. Doesn’t matter where you’re from or what your story is—everyone is welcome. I know my team’s always got my back, and they know I have theirs both on and off the track.

Roller derby is the queerest, craziest, most kayotic game I’ve ever played! I went from not being able to stand on skates to booty bumping people off the track. Derby has taught me so much through all the blood sweat and tears and is one of the most accepting communities I’ve been apart of!! I have so much to learn and I’m so ready to watch myself and my teammates grow!!!

I learned to roller skate when I started the New Skater Program. I’m so happy I took a chance and tried something new. Everyone is so supportive, and they genuinely want you to succeed. No one believes in you more than your teammates.
